Genesee Health System Recognizes September as Suicide Prevention Month
GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Each September, Genesee Health System (GHS) and the Genesee County Suicide Prevention Coalition observe Suicide Prevention Month as a time to raise awareness, honor those lost to suicide, and support individuals, families, and communities impacted by suicide.
In the United States, one life is lost to suicide every 11 minutes. Here in Genesee County, more than 55 lives are lost each year.
“GHS encourages everyone to recognize this important month by sharing information about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline with friends and family, and by posting on social media using #988Day,” said Carrie Chanter, GHS Director of Prevention, Health & Wellness. “Through our partnership with the Coalition, we remain committed to expanding education, increasing access to resources, and reducing barriers to care.”
The Genesee County community can join in recognizing National Suicide Prevention Month by participating in local events, engaging in conversations about mental health, and sharing vital crisis resources:
- Genesee Health System Free Community Trainings: genhs.org/free-training/
- Genesee Health System Text Crisis Line: Text GHS to WEGOTU (934688)
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org

In addition, GHS hosts monthly Suicide Prevention Coalition meetings and has developed a Zero Suicide Proclamation as part of its commitment to system-wide prevention efforts.
